Branch 3-5 Opsal / Andvig

Anna Elisabeth Oftebro and Jens Christensen Opsal
Documentation and a rich photo archive enables us to follow Jens
Christensen and Anne Elisabeth (Oftebro) Opsal through life, from
Jens was born in 1837, and till Anna Elisabeth died at Hinna near
Stavanger in 1940.

The family farms in Lyngdal
The family in Lyngdal is specially related to the farms at
Opsal and Eastern Rom. Christen Jensen Opsal and his
son Jens Christensen Opsal owned the two farms from
the 1830s till 1927. At the Oftebro Family Reunion in
2004, both the farms were visited by a large number of
descendants of Christen and Jens.

Ancestors of Jens Chr. Opsal
The families of Jens’ father, Christen Jensen Opsal and his
mother Anna Helene Lene are widespread in the Lyngdal area.
Among the ancestors are the family of Møskeland and Outer
Egeland, which can be traced to the year 1460.

Ancestors of Anna Elisabeth Oftebro
The ancestors of Anna Elisabeth Oftebro may, by the
Birkeland and Sandsmark families, be traced back to year
1150 and the higher aristocracy in the Middle Ages. The
families at Aga and Galtung/ Ænes were among the most
powerful families in Norway and belonged innermost circle of
the royal family.

Descendants of Jens and Anna Elisabeth
Jens and Anna Elisabeth had 12 grandchildren and 25 great-
grandchildren. The grandchildren were mainly living in the
Oslo area, Stavanger, Kristiansand and Canada (Gisle). The
25 great-grandchildren are scattered all over Norway, Europe and Canada/ USA.

Nobility and Royal family in the Middle Ages
Recent research concludes with high probability that the Aga-family
descends from King Magnus IV Erlingson (b. 1155) through the kings
daughter Ingeborg, while the Galtung-family descends from King
Håkon IV Håkonson (1204-1263) through his elder son Sigurd.

Who was Terje Vigen?
Henrik Ibsen’ poem Terje Vigen is among the most famous and popular poems of
Norwegian literature. Ibsen was an assistant at Grimstad Pharmacy in the years 1844-50.
He became a close friend to the pilot Svend Hanssen Haaø, who is regarded the model for
Terje Vigen. Oftebro branch 3-5-7 is descending from Svend Hanssen Haaø.

Knatten at Haaø Island
The Haaø Island outside Grimstad has been a popular
holiday resort for the family for several generations. The
family history at the island dates back to 1550.
